NCU has announced two calls for applications regarding strategic projects: 1) New tobacco products, snus and e-cigarettes. 2) Research projects on socioeconomic inequality and cancer.
1) Strategic projects concerning new tobacco products, snus and e-cigarettes
NCU invites relevant applicants to apply for funding targeted at strategic projects concerning new tobacco products and nicotine containing products (smokeless tobacco, snus, chewing tobacco, heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes). We encourage not only applications targeting classical research/science projects but also projects with a more broad approach.
The project(s) should give insight to the prevalence of use of smokeless tobacco, snus, chewing tobacco, heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes in the Nordic Countries2 especially with focus on their use and appeal among children and adolescents with the aim of proposing recommendations for a common NCU policy in the area.
- The project(s) could include analysis of e.g.:
- Which impact do flavorings have on the use of the novel tobacco products and e-cigarettes.
- The significance of the political regulation of flavors, e.g. by looking at the significance of the legislation of flavored tobacco products in Finland compared to the other Nordic countries and the impact on adolescent uptake and perceptions of these products.
- Marketing and packaging – e.g. by looking at the significance of plain packaging in Norway compared to the other Nordic countries and how marketing and packaging affects uptake, use and perceptions.
- The health risks of the products, especially with focus on cancer.
Application content
- Application letter delineating how the project will accommodate an overview over the use and propose recommendations for a common NCU policy on the area
- Project description of no more than four pages with work plan and time schedule
- Budget information including information on other funds
- Brief CV of the applicants, as well as information on position, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail for at least for the principal applicant
Project criteria
- Timeframe: 2 years
- Budget: Maximum 150.000 euro
2) Research projects on socioeconomic inequality and cancer
Increasing the knowledge on socioeconomic inequality – including marginalised groups and migrant populations for both prevention (information and intervention), better and equal care cancer care.
This area will enable the Nordic countries to support prevention and intervention strategies and possibly lead to closer collaboration between the Nordic countries on developing information material and strategies to be used nationally.
Projects to be considered could address socioeconomic inequality and cancer from a number of perspectives, including:
- Barriers for screening participation among different groups of non-western immigrant women in the Nordic countries
- Cancer in migrant minority groups or other marginalized groups
- How to address socioeconomic inequality in cancer care pathways in the Nordic countries
- Inequality in participation in clinical studies.
- Patient reported outcome measures (PROM) – how do we reach all patients?
- New and complex diagnostic procedures and socioeconomic inequality
- Transition between and within health care sectors
Application content
- Project description of no more than four pages with work plan and time schedule
- Budget information including information on other funds
