On the 30th of October the Nordic Council adopted a resolution concerning focus on long-term perspectives on cancer in the Nordic countries and cooperation between the NCU, the Nordic Council and the Nordic Council of Ministers on initiatives launced by the Nordic Cancer Union.
In November 2012 Høgni Hoydal and Helgi Abrahamsen, two members of the faroese parliament, submitted the resolution to the Nordic Council. The resolution was referred to the Welfare Committee of the Nordic Council. In September 2013, Jákup N. Olsen, chairman of NCU, was at a meeting with the Welfare Committee to discuss the resolution. It proved to be a fruitful meeting where members of the Welfare Committee had the opportunity to hear more about the work of the NCU and how NCU envisions a strengthened cooperation between the Nordic Council, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Cancer Union. After the meeting the Committee decided unanimously to recommend the Nordic Council to adopt the resolution.
To support the further treatment of the resolution, the members of NCU decided to hold one of their meetings in Oslo during the Nordic Council Session in October 2013 in the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget). Furthermore, the NCU had a stand at the Session with educational materials concerning the NCU. Many politicians visited the stand at the Session. On the 30th of October, the NCU members met in the parliament to attend the treatment of the resolution.
In the Parliament, Helgi Abrahamsen, explained why he and Høgni Hoydal had submitted the proposal to the Nordic Council. After his speech, Karsten Hansen, Minister of Health on the Faroe Islands, recommended the Nordic Council to adopt the resoultuion and said that he and the Council of Ministers would make every effort to implement the resolution. After some discussion concerning the subject, the resolution was unanimously adopted by the Nordic Council.
The members of the Nordic Cancer Union were delighted that the resolution was adopted and are looking forward to good cooperation with the Nordic Council of Ministers. Jákup N. Olsen, chairman of NCU, states that “Currently, it is of utmost importance that the Nordic Council of Ministers takes the assignment seriously and implements the resolution for the benefit of all cancer patients in the Nordic countries.”
